Travelling by bike from Burgdorf (CH) following the rivers Emme (CH), Aare (CH) and Rhine to Rotterdam (NL), where I take the ferry to England to find my destination Henley-on Thames. That's what happend on day 5:
I'm still in the german village Breisach-on-Rhine. A nice little village with wineyards, a little castle and many ice cream parlours. As I'm getting ready for my next stage, there are four bavarian spare-time-cyclists standing around my longrider (I call my bike "Thomi Longrider"). "Ja Maj, wo willsch Du denn heut' noch hin" (where are you going today), they asked in their wellknown dialect. The four were discussing about the best equipement, my bike and my equipement and the best way to get to Kehl, where they liked to go (the german village next to Strasbourg on the other side of the Rhine). When it was clear, that we would have the same way to go, the four older men presented all their travelknowlege in form of a good advice for a young man like me. They did not have any maps or something, but the nice lady in the Hostel recommended to take the left side of the Rhine in France. That I've got good maps, that I recommended the official cycling-route no. 15 and that there are always good signs to follow was simply ignored by the the group of well experienced old men. Much more they were proud to give a young cyclist some useful advice. Every day a good action ;). It was not the last time I saw the four bavarians on this day. But for the moment we went our own ways.
At the beginning of my stage I crossed the bridge again to reach the french side. The Rhine presented himself dominant, impressive and strong. No wonder, if I remember who much rain came down the last few days.
Soon I reached Brisach (F) and via some small villages I got to the "Calan du Rhône au Rhin" again (followed that channel before from Basel for a while). The channel flows parallel to the Rhine and you know what? I followed that channel for the whole way to Strasbourg, which means for arround 28 miles.
A dream! So beautiful. My highlight so far. And there was so much to see. Did you know, that there are turtles living in the river (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europ%C3%A4ische_Sumpfschildkr%C3%B6te )? I was lucky and saw one but wasn't able to take a photograph before it dived down again.
Light and Shade where changing allways and from time to time there were some raindrops falling down, but nothing scary. Absolutely not. the landscape presented itself from romantic to dramatic, while the sunlight came out and hided again. From time to time the channel and the cycleway crossed a little road, before they continued. And you will not believe, but on one of this crossings I discovered the four Bavarians again. They were arguing about the bad trafficsigns and the small roads and didn't see me. And they didn't notice that they were next to the most beautiful cycleway, which leads directly to Strasbourg. But when they get their beer at the next pub in germany they will be happy again. For some people the way ist the goal. For some others the way is just the way to the destination. I was happy on my way and found many more awesome views and saw many little wild creatures with the beaver family and the turtle as my absolut favorites. The biggest obstacles on my way were very small. They were snails with transportable home or without.
I reached Strasbourg without trouble and was surprised that their was so much going on in town. there were concerts, markets and many people celebrating. It took a while, but when the fireworks was going on I recognised that today it was the 14th of July, which is the Birthday of France. The party was extremely peaceful and everybody was very happy. People were dancing in the streets and enjoying themselves.
That there was an attack in Nizza with so many victims I heard not until the next morning. Why? But that's something completely different and will not take place in my travel notices.
